The FECEC Junts contra el Càncer participated this morning in the World Cancer Congress organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in Geneva (Switzerland). The entity has intervened as a member entity of the European Cancer Leagues (ECL) to talk about the Right to be Forgotten in Spain.

The session “The Right to be Forgotten beyond Cancer – Learning Perspectives and Patient Insights” organized by the Working Support Patient Group of the ECL, had as its objectives to deepen the right to be forgotten in cancer and how it affects people with a previous diagnosis of cancer and their families; and share knowledge and learning about the challenges faced by EU Member States that have introduced national legislation on this issue.

he session was attended by Suzanne Dowd, from the Irish Cancer Society, with the presentation “Defining the ‘Right to be Forgotten beyond cancer’ and its impact”; Wim Geluykens, from the Kom op tegen Kanker, with the presentation “EU Initiatives and Key Learnings”; and Clara Rosàs, from FECEC Junts contra el Càncer, with the presentation “The right to be forgotten in Spain, a work in progress”.

With their presentations, the participants provided an overview of the initiatives being carried out in the Member States to improve the access of people with a previous diagnosis of cancer to access certain financial products or services . They have also shared examples of the impact on the patient when access to certain financial products or services is denied.

This is a priority issue of global interest, as thanks to advances in the search for new treatments and screening, more and more people are overcoming the disease. Many of these patients face discrimination for many years when accessing certain financial products or services, such as mortgage insurance, travel insurance, etc.
