Maya’s Illusion has renewed the look of the Oncology and Medical Day Hospital at Figueres Hospital with a new design for the walls of the treatment rooms, cubicles and waiting room. FECEC Junts contra el Càncer supports the fourth intervention in this hospital space humanisation project.
It is a colourful composition of vinyl fish and corals evoking the seabed and connecting the healthcare environment with the coastal landscape of Alt Empordà. These marine-themed vinyl designs, created in cheerful, highly visible colours, are the work of interior designer Marta Prats and illustrator Eli Flos. With this intervention at Figueres Hospital, four interventions have now been carried out in Catalan hospitals as part of “Maya’s Illusion. Decorating Cancer”, a hospital space humanisation initiative aimed at creating welcoming environments to transport patients to a setting that helps them escape from the experience of illness during their visits to the hospital. The initiative is supported throughout the implementation process by the Federació Catalana d’Entitats Contra el Càncer (FECEC) and Fundació Roses Contra el Càncer, a member organisation in the area.

The nursing director of Fundació Salut Empordà, Paqui Abulí, explains that “in recent years, thanks in part to the involvement of local organisations, we have been humanising various spaces at Figueres Hospital. We are convinced that healthcare must move in this direction: making the healthcare environment more welcoming and comfortable. We must ensure that, despite going through an illness such as cancer, patients’ stay can also be an experience of well-being. That is why we would like to thank Maya’s Illusion and FECEC for their project, and Fundació Roses Contra el Càncer for always thinking of us and supporting us.
For Natàlia Roca, the driving force behind Maya’s Illusion, this fourth project is particularly significant: “With this new intervention, we are continuing the initiative conceived by Maya Recio, which we continue to carry out in her memory. Our mission is to expand and promote Maya’s Illusion, reaching as many people and hospitals in Catalonia as possible.
The president of FECEC Junts contra el Càncer, Maria Assumpció Vilà, whose organisation supports Maya’s Illusion in carrying out its hospital space humanisation project, highlights the importance of these types of initiatives. “Cancer patients experience a significant emotional impact throughout their journey with cancer. Making the rooms where they receive treatment warmer and more welcoming is very important for improving their emotional well-being. That is why FECEC Junts contra el Càncer has been collaborating on this project for years, and we hope to continue doing so for many more years to come,” says Vilà.
The president of Fundació Roses Contra el Càncer, Núria Páramo, highlights the organisation’s commitment to initiatives that help humanise cancer care. In the words of the organisation’s head, “the fact that this project has reached Figueres Hospital holds special significance for us, as it is a reference centre for many people in our area. At the Foundation, we believe that humanising care also means taking care of the spaces where it takes place. Therefore, being part of an initiative that transforms the environment of the Oncology and Medical Day Hospital is an opportunity to continue making progress towards more person-centred care”.
